Resistance bands and free weights are two of the most common ways to load a muscle. A free weight, such as a dumbbell or barbell, supplies resistance through gravity acting on a fixed mass. An elastic band supplies resistance through the tension of a stretched elastic material, which increases the further the band is stretched. Both make a muscle work against an external force, and a frequent question is whether one is simply better than the other for getting stronger or building muscle.

For lower-limb strength the standardized mean difference was -0.11, with a 95 percent confidence interval from -0.40 to 0.19, and for upper-limb strength it was 0.09, with a confidence interval from -0.18 to 0.35. In both cases the confidence interval comfortably includes zero, meaning the data do not show one method outperforming the other. The authors' conclusion is stated plainly: elastic resistance training is able to promote similar strength gains to conventional resistance training, in different population profiles and using diverse protocols.

The practical reading is that, for getting stronger, a band is a real strength tool rather than a watered-down substitute. The same authors highlight the practicality and low cost of elastic resistance as reasons it deserves to be taken seriously, which is particularly relevant for training at home, while travelling, or anywhere a full rack of loaded equipment is not available.

Where the two tools genuinely differ

Similar strength outcomes do not mean the two tools feel or behave the same way, and there are real differences worth understanding neutrally, without casting either as better.

The most fundamental difference is the shape of the resistance. A free weight loads a muscle through gravity acting on a fixed mass, so the external load stays roughly constant from the bottom of a rep to the top. An elastic band loads a muscle through the tension of a stretched material, and that tension rises the further the band is stretched, producing an ascending resistance profile that is lightest at the start of the range and hardest near the end.
